Over 650 attended the Women & Agriculture Conference in Killarney on October 17th. The main themes were ‘The Farming Journey’ and ‘Personal Journeys’. Speakers on the day included Matt Dempsey (Editor of the Irish Farmers Journal), Dr.Thia Hennessy (Agriculture Economist, Teagasc), Áine Lawlor (RTE) and Dr. Maureen Gaffney (Psychologist and Broadcaster). Despite the bad weather conditions, a big crowd turned out for the Teagasc farm walk in Johnstown Castle, Co.Wexford on Wednesday 10th October. Ailish Byrne and Deirdre O’Shea (Ulster Bank Agri. Team) were among those who attended. The event focused on ‘Early Maturing Dairy Calf to Beef Trial’. This is an important area as these type of farming systems will become more prevalent from 2015 onwards due to the abolition of milk quotas.
