twitter + facebook freaks me out. I am only just over 40 and I love new technology (mostly physical) to give a profile. Maybe we could have a learners section for mid life people on the site (Fionan/Ron)??

I think these sites fill a communications zone that is very suitable for some people (sub 30)! but my zone has been face to face/phone. Help me to adjust.... Please////

Hi Nick,

Why not sign up to facebook, take the tour - you're prompted all the way. Nobody but you knows you are there and if you don't like what you see you can deactivate or delete. It's not for everybody as some people feel everybody is watching them, but there are privacy settings for that. I've got friends who log on regularly in their 50s/60s and others in their 20s who haven't logged on for months.

Twitter is a bit different but again you can sign up and watch from the sidelines to get a feel for it.

Once you've done that, there are plenty of people on here who can help you as they really aren't as daunting as they can appear

That's actually a great idea Nick. I'm not sure if it necessarily needs a new 'section', perhaps a dedicated thread for both Twitter and Facebook might fill the need? Somewhere to post questions (no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to something like social media, it's alarming how easy it is [even for the big brands] to get it so wrong) and seek input from peers/experts in the area would be very helpful to the community.

Hi Nick, It might interest you to know that your age group is the fastest growing segment on social media channels. My advice is this - devote a few hours to 'getting a feel' for a channel in turn. Try Facebook first and explore all the features. Play around a bit - send a friend request, start a few conversations, upload a picture, then an album.

In no time at all you will become comfortable with the platform. It's never easy learning something new, but I urge you to give it a try. I did put togther a guide to the basics for my networking group....if I can find it I'll send to you, or I'll put a small one together for you.
