Sport for Business works with businesses from the biggest to the smallest finding ways to integrate the passion of sport into sales, marketing, business development, taken identification and retention.
Sport for Business 20/20 for 2015 allowed sporting organisations to pitch programmes for 2015 to a receptive business audience drawn from the Sport for Business community. Today we start a short series, in partnership with Small Business Can where we bring these opportunities to a wider audience.
First up is From Great Coaches Come Future Championships – A Sponsorship Opportunity with Athletics Ireland which was voted by those present at the Ulster Bank Headquarters as the best presentation of the day.
An Organisation in Growth and Performing
Athletics Ireland is the National governing body for athletics in Ireland and has a broad remit of promoting athletics on an elite and mass participation level. It is one of the fastest growing sports in Ireland with membership up 42% over the last 5 years to just over 50,000. In addition there are over 300,000 people (16+) running regularly in the country (Irish Sports Monitor).
Athletics is also delivering performances with 15 medals won at major championships in the last 2 years. These include double European Gold medals by Fionnuala Britton, Robert Heffernan becoming world champion in the 50k walk andMark English who at only 21 years of age won a bronze medal in the 800m at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich this summer.
More Athletes Winning on the World Stage
These athletes are part of the Athletics Ireland High Performance squad of 88 athletes that have been identified as having potential for Rio 2016 to Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Athletics Ireland High Performance Strategic Plan was launched in 2013 withprovided a comprehensive framework for supporting these athletes to enable them toreach their potential. The plan’s core objective was centred on having More Athletes Winning on the World Stage.
From Great Coaches Come Future Champions
Central to achieving this objective was the development of an athlete centred high performance system which provides athletes with appropriate competition and support services such as strength and conditioning and access to physiotherapist and nutritionist in addition to performance coaching
Performance coaching is part of an overall Athletics Ireland pathway supporting coaches to bring athletes from grassroots to glory. Some very positive steps have been made in this area in the last 18 months with the appointment of the association’s first full time coach Chris Jones, as National Endurance Coach. In addition the process has begun of identifying coaches who can deliver 2016/2020 performance goals so that they can be supported and facilitated in their transitionfrom Development to World Class Coaches. These coaches will have a great impact on performances now and into the future; From Great Coaches Come Future Champions.
Support and Investment
Investment is needed however to continue to expand performance coachingprogramme to deliver more medals on the world stage and have future champions Support received will be channelled directly into performance coaching to facilitatethe hiring of more full time coaches and provide world class coaching expertise toperformance coaches in Ireland.
Athletics Ireland can offer a comprehensive support package including brand exposure on competition clothing for major championships from European Championships to World Indoor Champions. In addition a comprehensive employee engagement can be provided including training and guidance from leading coaches on training for your first 5k to running a marathon with complimentary entry into key races. There is also considerable scope for delivery of activations across digital channels from website to social to email marketing.
