Useful statistics

  • 1.9m – People now in work, up 31,600 in Q2 2014 compared to Q2 2013
  • 1.7% – Increase in employment in the last year
  • 11.1% – Current unemployment rate (Sept 2014) down from 15.1% (Feb 2012)
  • 6.8% – Long term unemployment rate (Q2 2014), down from 8.1% (Q2 2013)
  • 254,500 – People unemployed (Q2 2014), down from 300,700 (Q2 2013) from the CSO’s QNHS

  • CarTrawler, Dublin (Dundrum), 400 jobs • Car rental business creating jobs in business development, customer operations, data science, finance and engineering
  • Brown Thomas, Dublin, 200 jobs • Fashion retailer hiring 200 extra staff members for the Christmas period. Jobs include Sales Consultants, Sales Support & Cashiers
  • West Pharma, Waterford, 150 jobs • Pharmaceutical company expanding its global manufacturing operations. New site in Waterford will produce packaging components
  • Optel Vision, Limerick, 140 jobs • Canadian manufacturing equipment company creating jobs over 3 years. Setting up an EMEA manufacturing and operations centre in Limerick
  • Qualcom, Dublin, 40 jobs • Roles range from helpdesk operators to project managers. IT & data management solutions company won 15 new deals so far this year
  • Next Generation, Dublin, 20 jobs • Recruitment firm to hire new staff over 6 month period as demand grows for actuaries and data scientists
  • Riverside Park Hotel, Wexford, 10 jobs • Jobs created thanks to €1.6m investment in Enniscorthy premises. These new jobs bring total workforce to 145

  • 140 jobs to go as Beckman Coulter factory (Galway) closes with 80 of its employees offered redeployment at Co. Clare facility

CSO: Unemployment falls again for 27th month in a row, now at 11.1%

  • People signing on the Live Register fell by 4,700 in September on a seasonally adjusted basis
  • This is the 27th month in a row that the Live Register figures have dropped
  • Unemployment rate now 11.1% and below the euro zone average of 11.5%

 Employment and Youth Activation Charter launched this week

  • New initiative was launched during ‘Jobs Week’, with a number of leading employers signing the new charter
  • Employers pledge at least 50% of candidates considered at interview will be taken from the Live Register
  • Other commitments include job sampling tours, speaking at Job Clubs and internship work
  • Charter developed by Labour Market Council, a group of industry experts that help drive the Government’s Pathways to Work strategy to tackle unemployment

 Ireland above average for SMEs, according to EU Commission

  • Ireland scores above the EU average in eight of nine policy measures for supporting SMEs, according to the European Commission
  • Ireland scores well for friendly business environment, efficient administration and entrepreneurial business culture
  • Area that needs continued support is ensuring strong access to finance

 Skillnets exceeds expectations, according to independent report

  • Skillnets, a state funded support body for training and upskilling, has exceeded its Governmental targets for 2013
  • Just over 48,000 Jobseekers Support Programme training days were provided to around 3,000 trainees (4% ahead of Skillnets’ target) all within budget with 47% of Jobseekers Support Programme trainees progressing into employment

Employers optimistic ahead of 2015 – CPL Employment Market Monitor

  • 53% of employers are recruiting as their operations are expanding , according to CPL
  • 1 in 3 employers have used a government initiative to hire in the last 12 months, such as JobsPlus
  • 70% of employers say they would hire someone in their 20s over other age groups

Sharpest rise in new business since May 2006 – Investec  Services Purchasing Managers’ Index

  • September saw further strong improvements in Irish services, driven by fastest expansion in new business in 8 years
  • Almost 60% of businesses forecast rise in activity over next 12 months, linked to general confidence in the economy and expectations of new order growth – growth of new export orders also accelerated during September
  • Manufacturing PMI also growing: At 55.7 in September, slightly down from August’s 15-year high of 57.3, but is the 16th straight month of growth

Almost 75% of tourism businesses upbeat about 2014 business performance

  • Business sentiment at a level not seen since the Celtic Tiger years, according to Fáilte Ireland Tourism Barometer
  • 79% of accommodation providers report increase in visitor volumes this year, compared to the same time last year
  • 72% of restaurants report their overseas visitor volumes to be up on 2013
  • While, new CSO figures show domestic trips have gone up 5.2% in Q2 2014, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same time last year

New joint visa initiative launched between Ireland and the UK

  • The British Irish Visa Scheme will allow for travel to and around the Common Travel Area (CTA) on a single visa
  • Presently, many overseas tourists and business visitors who wish to visit both Ireland and the UK, including Northern Ireland, need separate visas
  • First phase of the scheme is being commenced in China and India this autumn
