Useful statistics

  • 1.9m – People now in work, up 31,600 in Q2 2014 compared to Q2 2013
  • 1.7% – Increase in employment in the last year
  • 11.1% – Current unemployment rate (Sept 2014) down from 15.1% (Feb 2012)
  • 6.8% – Long term unemployment rate (Q2 2014), down from 8.1% (Q2 2013)
  • 254,500 – People unemployed (Q2 2014), down from 300,700 (Q2 2013) from the CSO’s QNHS

  • ESB currently advertising for a number of graduate positions commencing in September 2015
  • SmartInvest, a transatlantic ICT fund, announced a new €56m scheme which could create 450 new jobs nationwide
  • American IT company Rapid7 to create 75 jobs (Belfast) with a new operation in Northern Ireland
  • LinkedIn to invest in its international headquarters in Dublin, new space will allow staff numbers to double to 1,200
  • 60 jobs to go as Clohessy’s Bar in Limerick closes after 13 years in business
  • Cigarette factory, JTI Gallaher plant (Ballymena, Antrim), to close with the loss of 900 jobs

Pathways to Work 2015 launched

  • Pathways to Work strategy seeks to ensure that as many newly created jobs as possible go to those on the Live Register
  • Key measures include:
    • Public benchmarking of Intreos and other training services to ensure delivery of employment targets
    • New dedicated accounts managers for employers looking to hire from the Live Register
    • JobPath will provide additional employment services focused on the long-term unemployed
    • Continuation of Youth Guarantee initiatives to support young jobseekers

New entrepreneurship plan aims to create 93,000 extra jobs from start-ups over the next 5 years

  • Target of 25% increase in start-ups, which will mean 3,000 more start-ups per annum
  • New plan aims to double the investment figure per annum by business angel investors in Ireland into start-ups
  • New targets for Government agencies, including a 12% increase for start-up support by Enterprise Ireland in 2015
  • Entrepreneurship programmes in schools, third and fourth level education, and in new apprenticeships systems
  • New incubation spaces made available for start-ups right across the country

Consumer sentiment at 7 year high: KBC Bank/ESRI survey

  • KBC Bank Ireland/ESRI Consumer Sentiment Index was 92.8 in September, compared to 87.1 in August
  • Almost 60% of those surveyed said they expect economic improvement in the coming year, compared to 52% in August
  • Level of negative sentiment around the jobs market also declined to 18%, from 24% in August

SME sector strengthening, according to ISME survey

  • 4 key business indicators have seen double digit increases, according to ISME Quarterly Business Trends Autumn 2014
  • ‘Business Environment’ increased by 23 points, ‘Current Employment’ up 2 from 14% to 16%
  •  ‘Current Sales’ have increased by 11 points to 22% and ‘Sales Expectations’ up 12 points to 42%

Ibec report raises 2014 growth forecast to 6.1%

  • Ibec’s Quarterly Economic Outlook significantly raises its 2014 growth forecast from 3.1% to 6.1%
  • Ibec says Ireland’s “spectacular” growth would make it the fastest growing economy in Europe this year
  • Quality of employment growth has improved as more new roles are full-time rather than part-time

New look Advisory Group on Small Business convenes for the first time

  • Minister Nash chaired the first meeting of the reconstituted group
  • Priority issues for the Group are Budget 2015 and proposals to support SMEs to be included in Action Plan for Jobs 2015
  • Membership of the Advisory Group ranges from entrepreneurs to main business representative bodies
  • Officials from state enterprise support agencies, Irish Farmers Association and Credit Review Office also in attendance

Passengers up 5.3% at Aer Lingus

  • Figures from the airline show they carried 1.041m passengers in September, a 5.3% improvement on September 2013
  • Short-haul traffic grew by 1.2% year-on-year in September while long-haul traffic grew 27.8%
  • Total passengers for the first 9 months of 2014 rose by 4.5% year-on-year

EU Commission to fund retraining for Limerick jewellery workers who had been made redundant

  • Programme of guidance, training, education and enterprise supports for over 300 individuals in West Limerick under the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund, after application made by Government
  • Second application has been submitted in support of Lufthansa Technik Airmotive Ireland in Dublin for 427 people
