Useful statistics

  • 1.9m – People now in work, up 31,600 in Q2 2014 compared to Q2 2013
  • 1.7% – Increase in employment in the last year
  • 11.2% – Current unemployment rate (Aug 2014) down from 15.1% (Feb 2012)
  • 6.8% – Long term unemployment rate (Q2 2014), down from 8.1% (Q2 2013)
  • 254,500 – People unemployed (Q2 2014), down from 300,700 (Q2 2013) from the CSO’s QNHS

New CSO figures show strongest growth rate recorded since the early 2000’s 

  • 5% increase in GDP and 0.6% increase in GNP reported for Q2 this year
  • 0% increase year-on-year in GNP and 7.7% increase in GDP
  • Substantial growth in agriculture, industry, construction, transport, software & communications in Q2 2014

Ireland is the highest ranked European country in latest HSBC trade confidence index

  • Ireland’s score has risen by two points from 117 to 119
  • Around 70% of survey respondents expect trade to increase in next 6 months, up from 65% in March survey
  • Chemicals and pharmaceuticals will play the biggest role in driving export growth in both the short and medium term, while Ireland’s agri-business sector is predicted to grow by 40% by 2030
  • According to Bloomberg News survey, the Irish economy is predicted to grow by 0.9% in the three months to the end of September with 1% growth expected in Q4 2014

Economic boost expected as Dublin confirmed for Euro 2020 Championships

  • Dublin has been confirmed as one of the 13 host venues for the Euro 2020 Championships
  • This adds to the list of international sporting events Ireland has hosted, including the recent Giro d’Italia
  • Minister Ring: “This will have a significant economic impact, the hosting of major sports events can deliver additional international visits and helps to put Ireland onto travel itineraries as a holiday destination.”

More than half of Irish SMEs in better shape than before the recession – PWC  survey

  • 54% of Irish SMEs feel that their business is in better financial health now, compared to 5 years ago
  • 87% of Ireland’s private & family businesses are favourable about the outlook of the economy in the year ahead
  • 64% of Irish SMEs plan to grow export volumes in the next 3 to 5 years

New Tourism Ireland strategy launched to boost tourism from Canada

  • Strategy sets out targets to increase Canadian visitors to Ireland by 47% to 184,000 by 2016
  • Strategy includes direct, scheduled flights from Toronto to Ireland this winter for the first time
  • Aim is to deliver around €134 million in revenue (+47% growth) for the economies north and south
  • Canadian visitors are estimated to have increased by 28% 2011 to 2013
  • In 2013, around 125,000 Canadians visited the island of Ireland, spending about €91 million

Almost three-quarters of European businesses expect to reach digital maturity by 2019 – Ricoh survey

  • 71% of business leaders are confident they can transition to full digital maturity within just 5 years
  • Survey shows that digital maturity is now a priority for 77% of European businesses, with 73% believing achieving digital maturity will lead to an increase in profits; 68% see main obstacle as cost
  • Government initiative, Online Trading Voucher, aims to help Irish companies reach digital maturity

INOU publishes ‘Working for Work’ booklet to help jobseekers

  • The booklet outlines the rights and entitlements of individuals to social welfare payments and options to re-enter the labour market or to pursue further education and training
  • The publication is produced with financial support from the Department of Social Protection and the Department of Education and Skills
