A few weeks ago more than 650 representatives from SMEs across Northern Ireland and Ireland attended the largest ever InterTradeIreland ‘Meet the Buyer’ event held across the island to date in the Ramada, Belfast. The landmark public procurement event provided local businesses with the opportunity to meet directly with around 50 public sector buyers from both jurisdictions. This included buyers from a diverse range of sectors including representatives from Translink, Irish Rail, NIE, RTÉ, An Garda Síochána, NI housing Executive and various councils and government departments.

 Unlocking Public Sector Procurement Opportunities

This highly popular event, which reached maximum capacity weeks in advance, is designed to provide SMEs with an insight into the tendering process and how they can gain access to the all-island public procurement market, worth a staggering £10 billion. As well as engaging directly with key buyers, specialists were also on hand to give workshops and master-classes to SMEs on related topics such as ‘refining your pitch’, ‘consortia building’ and ‘lessons in tendering’.

 With the flexibility, value for money and innovative solutions offered by small businesses, they are often best placed to meet the demands of buyers in the public sector and a company that can have success in its local market has a heightened chance of success in other larger export markets.
