As you grow and build your business and beyond it is important to have motivated employees around you, so how do you not kill their motivation?
Even when you start out with motivated employees over time you will find that they have lost their motivation. This is due to several factors; the things you do or say to your employees are at the top of that list.
We are going to look at the things that can quickly kill your employees’ motivation and how you can stop that from happening.
Trust is the most important thing to your team developing the way it should. That trust runs both from you to your employees and from them to you. If they don’t trust you then you are left to motivate them the totally wrong way with rewards and punishments. This system only creates compliance to stay on your somewhat good side or they develop a sense of you owe them for their motivation and good work.
Second, you hired the people working for you because they had a skill or knowledge you needed. Allow them to use it in order to fill their purpose on the team.
So once you hire someone you are putting your trust in them to do the work and keep your business growing and hitting the goals you have set for it. They are trusting that they will have your help with growth and development at your company.
If you do not want your employees becoming work zombies, may sure you treat them the way they should be treated and without being in a work environment that is based on rewards and punishments.
Steps you can take to keep your employees’ motivation up
Here are some steps you can take to keep from killing your employees’ motivation.
Lack of professional development
A lack of professional development will kill an employees’ motivation quickly. If there is no development the job becomes static and boring. You can help your employees with professional development so that they can continue to grow and it will let them know that you are invested in their growth and their success.
Talking to your team about their goals
When you talk to your team talk to them as a human instead of a piece of equipment used to hit your goals of building your business. When talking to them do not ask how their target is in reaching their goals, what you can do for them, or how they want to arrange their projects.
Make sure that you are clear and as concise about the direction the team should be going in to reach the goals each of you have.
Negative people spread their negativity like wildfire. Keep them out of the project. If keeping them totally out of the project put them to the outer edges doing work that can be done alone such as making copies, or some other form of work that doesn’t require them to be mixing with the whole team.
Just because you’re always busy does not mean you are accomplishing your goals. Keep meetings, emails, and other busy work to a minimum during the project. There is no point wasting everyone’s time with the same details especially if they do not need those details for their portion of the project.
Show your employees that you value them
When you show your employees that you value them they will continue to work hard to reach the project goals and do it in a manner that is quick and efficient making the success of the project a personal goal for them and helps them not to be a workplace zombie.
Avoid bad leaders including yourself, bad leadership will do more harm than good when it comes to projects and working together to achieve success.
When it comes to your team be available to them if they have a question or concern they wish to discuss with you about the project and its success. If you are constantly in your office with the door closed, you are not available. Be sure to get around to the various team members every few days or at least once every couple weeks to see if they have any concerns or questions and let them know that you are available to them should they have any concerns with the project arise.
There’s need for a system
Create a system that everyone can use to update each other as needed on the project instead of having to have endless meetings or endless emails. If Joe has an issue in design, Bob in shipping does not need to know what that issue is or what the fix to that issue is. You get the idea. If you create a system that everyone can update and look at as needed they will know what needs working on and what has a fix. This will keep time from being wasted with too many different departments working on the same solution.
If you promise something and then break it, you just lost the trust of your team. Once the trust is lost it is extremely hard to rebuild that trust, so do not make promises you can’t keep and make sure that you keep the promises you have made. An example of this is you promise your employees the whole weekend off but then something comes up and you tell them you need them to work.
Treat your employees as people, not machines, show them they are appreciated and they will continue to do their best work for you. Keep the busy work to a minimum, and provide them with the tools they need to succeed such as a system to communicate and update the project when it is needed.
Be a good leader and hire managers who can provide good leadership. Good leadership, treating employees as people, and investing in your employees and their success is the key to making a good project great.
