Should I Design My Own Print Work?

We’ve all been there. Who hasn’t been seduced by the odd wonderfully upbeat TV or magazine ad about starting a business with a simple idea today and conquering international markets tomorrow? Or watched one of the Dragons’ Den success stories and thought ‘that could be me’?

But for those of us who have cast aside the certainty of a corporate salary and ‘gone it alone’, we often find a completely different situation.

In the early days, spending time and energy doing the myriad of tasks involved in building a business, such as drawing up a flyer template design or designing your contact cards, is second nature. However, as your business grows you will need to employ different people for different tasks.

At some point you must hand over responsibility of your taxes to an accountant or bookkeeper; at some point you must hand over answering the telephone to a receptionist; if you’re truly ambitious, at some point you dream of one day handing over the day to day running of your business to a MBA-trained manager.

In an effort to keep costs down, have you ever resorted to using Word or Pages when designing a brochure or leaflet. Or thought you could save money by printing a few hundred sheets on a home inkjet printer with premium paper from the supermarket? Did you ‘create’ your company logo using free internet clipart?     Many thanks for this.. I guess my confusions lies in when I start something without an idea of how long it will take. It often takes much longer then I anticipated because I simply don’t know how to do things and so end up trying to learn it.
