Start-up Story: The Independent Media Workshop

The noise of the woodplane against the oak, trails of sawdust filtered by the sun. A wood sculptor’s business.

The touch of sweet barley growing in the farmer’s back yard, the low of satisfied cattle. A hydroponic agri technology business.
The curved coloured bubbles of mind mapping for kids, a speed learning company.
7 billion watching, 4 dancing video peas, twirling trolleys, ticking clocks, a spinning Rubik cube, that’s us.

We create affordable creative online video for SME’s. So they can communicate in a more engaging manner to build (and retain) customers.
We offer a package tailored to small business needs including a video, logo and social media marketing tips for your shiny new video. We can help start ups create that perfect pitch. We can capture client testimonials for small businesses to showcase their products and services. And we can capture corporate events.

But enough words, take a look at our promo on this link.

Why did we start

We just love to create video. And we enjoy interacting with smaller businesses and feeling their passion about what they do. We have a lot of online and video experience and as a start-up ourselves we noticed that many small businesses seem to struggle with digital media and possibly miss out online compared to bigger companies. We also believe that video media is a must for all clicks and bricks businesses. Size doesn’t matter.

We felt there was a gap for creative video within the budget of SME’s, a gap that we could fill. We prefer collaborative creativity, working with the small business to first understand its business and then suggesting ideas to showcase it. We feel we have an expertise in understanding business, online media, technical video stuff and of course the hunger to deliver.

Where do we see it going

By investing our efforts upfront in getting to grips with the essence of a business, its online media strategy and its USP, we can partner with our customers to create something worthwhile that will generate a return on both our investment.
What is happening or needs to happen for it to grow?
We need to build our portfolio of media work. We aim to build our business through referrals, testimonials, a reputation for providing great value for money to generate a creative pipeline and of course lots of business for our clients. We aim to move into the game/competition space as an extension of video and social down the road.

What we have learned

Fail cheap and fast. Interact with your customers as soon as you can and learn, adapt, learn and repeat.

Tips for other business people starting out

Focus on your core skills. Leverage your small team. Seek feedback constantly, especially from your customers. Listen to all the advice offered but keep your own counsel. Follow the cash.
