Why did we start

Like many start-ups I spotted an opportunity in the market.

Before I started Inside Edge I worked for a number of organisations managing Training & Development. The majority of training programmes were developed in-house, but occasionally I wanted to get an external training partner to support.

There were two challenges. The majority of our employees had attended a lot of training throughout their careers so their expectations were high. They wanted to understand how to solve problems and adapt models as situations evolved. We needed training to offer real insight and high quality content or they would not attend future programmes.

It was difficult to find training partners who could meet these expectations – both in terms of content and how they delivered it. It was easier to find technical training providers (e.g. project management) than behavioural or ‘soft skills’ providers.

There were a few excellent companies that I partnered with.. These providers were often looking for more substantial projects and change programmes. Or it was difficult to get training dates without a lot of advanced planning. But often the business just needed a really excellent one or two day programme and it was often at short notice. I decided to look at ways to address this.

Where do we see it going

I see this as an exciting time for Training & Development in Ireland. I think the traditional model of training is changing.

Traditional training offers static solutions. It shows people one or two ways of solving a problem. I think the paradigm needs to shift toward dynamic problem solving. People need to understand the dynamics of their environment and how people with different personalities react in different situations.

I think organisation learning will become more aligned to the type of experience you have if you attend executive education programmes (e.g. MBA programmes). Coaching is going to play a much larger role.

We want to work with organisations to help them develop dynamic skills.

What have we learned

My first mentor gave me great advice. She told me how start-ups dramatically underestimate the amount of time required to get things done.

I remember thanking her for the advice and thinking that she didn’t realise how much work I could get through. After years working for large fast paced companies I could get through long task lists at breakneck speed.

Of course she was right. It’s different in a start-up. So many of the tasks involve doing new things and you have to develop and iron out processes. Taking time to reflect and plan is time well spent.

People are very willing to help. But sometimes you have to be proactive and ask for help. If you accept help you have to reciprocate and offer help to others.

Tips for other businesspeople starting out

1 Prioritise Networking.
Taking time out to attend networking events can feel like a luxury. We have targets for networking and making new connections.

2 Celebrate successes – even small milestones.
One of the benefits of having a good business plan is that it shows your progress – as well as everything you still have to do! It’s very exciting to be part of a new business – but it takes patience and discipline. It is important to celebrate milestones and acknowledge achievements, even small wins.

3 Get a mentor or coach.
I have learned so much from mistakes I’ve made. But it is really helpful to have people to turn to for advice on how to avoid obvious pitfalls. I have mentors and coaches that I meet with regularly and I also mentor and coach others. Their wisdom, support and encouragement has been invaluable.
