Start-Up Story: Sam’s Pantry

Sam’s Pantry was born out of a mothers frustration and inspired by one little boy who loves cake.

Take a moment and close your eyes

Imagine it is your 3rd birthday, everyone is singing Happy Birthday, and you make a wish and blow out your candles. Imagine if that wish was a simple as – please let me be able to eat my birthday cake! Having been diagnosed with a dairy intolerance 9 months previous, my happy smiley boy, faced the possibility of having to make such a wish.

Determined not to let this happen I searched high and low to find a delicious cake for my little boy. Eventually I found Gluten free bakery that made a dairy free cake. It had to be transported half way across the country and to say it was the worst for wear on arrival was an understatement. We made the best of it, even though I wasn’t the delectable cake I wanted. Little did I know this was the seed that would blossom into a business idea 6 months later.

New start

In November 2011 after 10 years in the construction industry I found myself unemployed and trying to ‘re-invent’ myself. After many discussions, I decided to explore the idea of manufacturing dairy free cakes and confectionery as there certainly is a market for it.

Sam’s Pantry is a baked goods and confectionery manufacturing enterprise specialising in dairy, lactose & casein free products, such as bespoke cakes, cookies, other baked goods and bake at home products such as our ‘Cookie Mix’ range.

The original trigger was trying to source a birthday cake; this led to looking at the market for developing a whole range of both special occasion and standard off-the-shelf dairy free cakes and confectionery products.

It is not only those with dairy intolerances who require dairy free products but also a whole range of people who are on dairy free diets.  These include people recovering from cancer, vegans, individuals who are undergoing fertility treatment and people with autism.

After consulting with the South Country Dublin Enterprise Board and obtaining support in the form of a mentor Sam’s Pantry was started in May 2012.

Since May 2012 the business has been growing steadily. Customers range from those who simply want a bespoke cake to those looking to purchase other dairy free products. I currently via my website and Facebook business page, have started to supply products to small retail.
