Why SMEs are important

SMEs are a crucial engine for economic growth in Ireland, said David Thomas, managing director, Corporate Markets at Ulster Bank.  “Successful small companies will be crucial in driving Ireland’s recovery. We are seeing about one hundred start ups every week and alongside exports and agriculture, these will drive recovery here.”

Minister Perry points out that restoring confidence is crucial. The 200,000 SMEs employ over 650,000 people.

It is something that will be debated at the Small Firms Association’s Annual Conference on June 20. This year’s theme is Restoring Consumer Confidence. It will address some of the policy actions that are required to return growth to the economy and also focus on all things customer. The event is sponsored by Ulster Bank.  “There are two main reasons why we decided to sponsor the conference. We wanted to continue to signal to the market our commitment to small businesses and to continue working with the small businesses that we have had a close relationship with over many years,” said Thomas.

We should have a means for letting the wider public know about how the SME sector is adding employment. Last week I met a small Irish Pharma distributor who has added 3 new employees in the last 4 months. Come on SME’s tell SBC and the world how well you’re doing. Success breeds success.
