Why working your passion doesn’t always pay

Passion is important to the success of any business or career path. However, passion alone is not enough to make that success happen. You must learn how to monetize your passion. Otherwise, you will spend a lifetime scraping by, never quite earning enough or being forced to take jobs you hate just to survive.

What exactly does the word “monetize” mean? In this context, it simply means finding a way to earn money doing what you are passionate about, no matter what that passion is. Of course, not every passion can be monetized. If you are passionate about African Tree Frogs, you are probably (although not definitely) out of luck. But, most people have at least one passion from which they could make money.

Get brainstorming

Your first step is to brainstorm a list of ways you could make money with your passion. Be creative and list everything that comes to mind, no matter how crazy it sounds. Take gardening, for example. What are some ways you could make money if you love to garden? Could you offer landscaping services? Could you write a few gardening guides to publish and sell? Maybe rent some space and start a gardening class through your local community center?

Once you have a few ideas that are a real possibility, do some research online. Find out if other people elsewhere are successfully doing what you want to do. If there are, then there is a good chance that your business can succeed as well. The key is to find ideas that have good potential for success but that are not overcrowded with competitors. Too much competition too close to you can make it difficult to get your own business off the ground.

When you are finished with your research, you should have a basic plan for starting your passion-based business. Now all you have to do is put your plan into action and follow a few basic guidelines.

Be prepared to work hard

When starting any new business venture, you must be prepared to work harder than you ever have in your life. It may take some time to see results, but the effort will be worth it.

Understand that if you pursue your passion as a business, it will no longer be a hobby. To be successful, you must treat your passion as a business. Sometimes that means making tough choices. Be prepared to do whatever it takes to make your business succeed.

Be open to new and different opportunities. It is not unusual to start out with one idea only to stumble upon something else. Keep your mind open and do not be afraid to alter your plans if a new wrinkle presents itself.

Never give up on your passion. If you try something without immediate success, do not give up. Learn from your mistakes and keep going. Try another idea or improve on the original one. Keep working until you find something that works.

Passion is a powerful force, but without a concrete plan to monetize it, it will never lead to more than a hobby. Back your passion with some solid ideas and nothing can stop you.
